Waynesboro nonsense
I’m told that the city library is now returning fines assessed on patrons for lost books to the city with the reasoning being that the money belongs to the city government’s general fund. So what if the book in question might not have been purchased by city funds in an era when a community group is committing its privately-raised dollars to filling the gaps?
Yep. We must be going broke.
I’ve still got leaves from last fall in my front yard that were never picked up by the city.
I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve had to go to city hall to deal with issues with our business license that weren’t handled right the first time.
The voters passed a referendum in 2007 to build a new West End fire station, which not only still isn’t open, but no ground has been broken, purchased, nothing.
Ditto for the expansion at the library, also approved by the voters in 2007.
It took us 18 months to get an economic-development director on board. For 18 months, we had nobody out there selling the city. At the height of a recession. With unemployment near 10 percent.
Now we’ve been six months without a tourism director as we’re spending $35,000 to develop a new tourism website and marketing brochure. Which makes a lot of sense – spending money on a department that nobody is there to run.
Conservative isn’t not spending money for the sake of not spending money. That’s being cheap. Conservative is spending money wisely.
Seems to me we’re not doing too much that we could put in the realm of wise right now down there in city hall.
So what’s the solution? Let’s cut more staff and slash public services even more.
Nonsense.

Chris: You have hit on the problem core of the city…too much posturing and not enough developmental planning on the part of the city council(s)! We seem to be floudering! We have had too many ” studies” in attempts to identify an aspiration of where we must go to survive! With no noticeable result. Perhaps the latest council will overcome the limitations of an at-large election process and return us to a more representative electoral process. It would be a start!
