My World

The important-sounding stuff first …

I’m a 15-year veteran of print and web media, radio and television.

I’ve covered two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – in addition to conducting one-on-one interviews with former Virginia governors George Allen, Jim Gilmore, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, current governor Bob McDonnell, and a host of other newsmakers in Richmond and on Capitol Hill.

I’m the co-owner of Augusta Free Press Publishing LLC and editor of AugustaFreePress.com and The New Dominion Magazine.

I’m the web editor and play-by-play webcaster for the Waynesboro Generals Valley League baseball team.

I’ve published two books, Stop the Presses, a humor column collection, and Judge Not, a political thriller. I also co-authored with Patrick Hite Mad About U: Four Decades of Basketball at University Hall. That book was released in September 2006, just before the opening of the John Paul Jones Arena (seems so long ago now …).

I’m a proud veteran of The News Virginian, a Waynesboro-based daily newspaper, and The Charlottesville-Albemarle Observer and The Shenandoah Valley Observer, both weeklies.

I’ve won 15 Virginia Press Association awards for my reporting and writing.

I also won the intramural free-throw shooting championship as a student at the University of Virginia in 1994. (I was 24-for-25 in the final round.)

The Personal Stuff

I’m a 1994 graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A. American government) and a 1990 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School in Fishersville, Va.

I was born in Staunton, Va., and grew up in Deerfield, Va., and Crimora, Va. I wake up every day thinking of myself as among the more well-rounded people that I know – an avid reader and writer and competitive rec-level basketball player who trains three days a week in kickboxing.

I’m blessed to be married to the former Crystal Abbe, whose alma mater’s football teams at Virginia Tech sport a 9-1 record against my beloved ‘Hoos on the gridiron since I proposed marriage to her in 1999.

(Despite that, I tuck her into bed every night with a UVa. Snuggie that keeps her warm and toasty.)

We’re saving up for their one good kid, who will matriculate at Harvard as a philosophy/nuclear physics double-major and starting left outside linebacker/lacrosse attack (depending on what gender we are blessed with) in the Class of 2034.

For the time being, our doting is focused on our beloved poodle, Benzi.
